AMERICAN NURSES ASSOCIATION
Congress on Nursing Practice and Economics Committee for Nursing Practice Information Infrastructure (CNPII)
Strategic Plan 2007 – 2009
ANA Strategic Imperatives:
Professional practice and excellence
Healthcare and public policy
Knowledge and research
Unification
Advocacy for work forces and workplace
Organizational effectiveness
CNPII Core Ideology:
Related to nursing practice information infrastructure, the Committee’s core purpose is to:
1. Serve as the primary authority for the ANA on the information infrastructure necessary to support nursing practice.
2. Influence health policy related to healthcare information technology at the international, national, state, local levels.
3. Encourage the continued development, maintenance, and integration of ANA recognized nursing terminologies.
4. Inform healthcare organizations of the need to capture standardized nursing data that expresses the presence and contribution of nursing, nursing research, and evidence based practice.
Envisioned Future:
In conjunction and in collaboration with the ANA’s strategic plan (2007-2008), CNPII will position itself to anticipate or identify environmental conditions related to information infrastructure within nursing practice. With the ANA, we realize the dynamic nature of the environment, and this committee will rapidly change its resource allocation to realize such opportunities and deter challenges through:
- Serving as the unifying force advancing quality healthcare for all through a primary voice for nursing’s role in developing information infrastructure.
- Leveraging information technology, systems, techniques, processes, and innovations that support nursing and capture the description of nursing practice.
- Acquiring, transforming, presenting and representing the data, information, and knowledge to support high quality, safe nursing care.
Mission Statement:
The CNPII seeks to ensure that clinical information systems include an interoperable infrastructure that permits the capture and exchange of data and information to clearly demonstrate the presence and value of nursing practice.
Core Goal 1: Serve as the Primary Authority for the ANA on the Information Infrastructure to Support Nursing Practice
Objective 1. Collaborate with ANA’s structural units to promote activities related to nursing informatics. (CNPE, NIDSEC, NDNQI, AAN, ANCC, MAGNET, Center for American Nurses)

Develop a cohesive model explaining how current terminologies and datasets are leading to an envisioned nursing information infrastructure that accurately reflects a “collective mind” (commonly embraced framework) for internal and external constituents. The goal is to reduce the fragmentation and increase the cohesiveness of nursing informatics efforts in the US. Will determine where such maps reside. |
