Check the Readability of Your Word Document

See Chapter 15 for more on Readabilty.

Word 2003

  1. Before you can do this you must set the proofing options. To do this: readability stats
    1. On the menu line click Tools>Options>Spelling and Grammar.
    2. Under Grammar click "Show readability statistics." If it is grayed out click "Check grammar as you type." after clicking the readability statistics you can uncheck it.
    3. Click OK
  2. Click on Tools>Spelling and Grammar
  3. Click "Ignore Once" until you reach the end of the document. You will then see the readability scores.

Word 2007

  1. Before you can use this you must set the proofing options to show the readabilitychecking statistics box score. To do this:
    1. Click the Office Logo
    2. On the bottom of the window that appears, click "Word Options."
    3. Under "When correcting spelling an grammar in Word" place a check in the box "Show readability statistics."
    4. Click OK.
    5. Click the "Review" tab.
  2. To use this, click "Spelling and Grammar."
  3. Click through all the grammar checks (you can click ignore once if you wish.) At the end you will see the Flesh/Kincaid reading score with other statistics.
