Recording Sound

Recorded sound can be used in Power Point Presentations, or even added to a Web page. Although many new computers come with a built in microphone, particularly notebooks, for best results, use a microphone attached to the sound input port. It is also a good idea to test your equipment for volume settings before recording.

Windows 95 & 98

  1. Click Start>Settings>Control Panel>Multimedia.
  2. Move the arrow after either record or playback to High.

To record

  1. Open the sound recorder by clicking on the Start button in the lower left of the screen.
  2. Then select Programs/Accessories/Multimedia/Sound Recorder
  3. Click File/New
  4. To begin recording, click the small red circle in the lower right corner.
  5. Click the square to the left of the red circle to stop recording.
  6. On the menu line click on File/Save As and name the file. Be sure you know the folder in which the file has been saved.

To play back

The sound you recorded can be used in a presentation program. To play back the sound in Sound Recorder

  1. Open the file (File/Open)
  2. To play the file, click on the triangle pointing to the right on the bottom of the window.
  3. To use in a presentation program, follow the instructions for the program. Use the help if you have not done this before.

Windows XP 

Changing sound levels

An audio input device, such as a microphone. It is a good idea to test your equipment for volume settings before recording. . If the sound is not loud enough, you can change the volume for the .wav files (which is the file format created by recording a sound) by changing the setting. To do this

  1. Click Start>Control Panel>Sounds Speech and Audio Devices.
  2. Under Pick a Task click on Adjust the System Volume
  3. For voice, Click the Voice tab and under voice recording click on Volume. Change the setting as necessary.
  4. For sounds, Click on Audio and under sound recording click on volume. Change the setting as needed.

To record

  1. Click on Start>All Programs>Accessories>Entertainment>Sound Recorder
  2. Click on the red circle in the diagram. Image of Sound Recorder Window
  3. Talk into the microphone, or if recording a sound start the sound.
  4. When the recording is completed, click on the square to the left of the circle.
  5. On the menu line click on File/Save As and name the file. Be sure you know the folder in which the file has been saved.

To play

  1. Click on the double arrows pointing to the left (1st button) to rewind.
  2. Click on the single arrow pointing to the right.
  3. To use in a presentation program use the help feature.

Set the recording level

Vista Recording

  1. Set the volume for the microphone.
  2. Click on Start>Control Panel>Sound
  3. On the Window that opens, click Recording

  4. Right click on the device you wish to use and select Properties
  5. On the next window click on the Levels tab

  6. Use the slider to select the desired sound level.

Record

  1. Click Start>All Programs>Accessories>Sound Recorder.
  2. Click Start Recording.

Vista Souind Recorder

  1. To stop recording, click Stop Recording which will be in the same place as Start Recording was. Save the file. It is a Windows Media File, extension .wmv

 

To play

Open Windows Explorer (Right click on the Start button and select Explore), locate the file and double click on the file name.

To insert the sound file into a Power Point presentation, use the Help feature, search for sound.
